The Kirklees st@y scheme is a floating support service available to anyone at risk of becoming homeless, or needing support in order to maintain their tenancy. The scheme aims to assist vulnerable people to stay in their own accommodation through a range of personal and practical support services.

Also based at the st@y office is the bisc@y scheme, which provides a specialist support service for those at risk of losing their accommodation, or who have been displaced by eviction, as a result of anti-social behaviour.

Aim: The scheme is available to anyone in the Kirklees Metropolitan area who is in need of the support. Whilst some clients may be facing eviction, others may be at risk of abandoning their property due to the problems they face, for example financial pressures, substance misuse, mental illness, etc, or possibly as a result of literacy or numeracy difficulties. The aim is to enable the client to develop the skills to live as independently as possible, allowing them to make informed choices about their lives, and thereby creating a sustainable tenancy.

The objectives of the service are to: –
- Reduce wasted resources; ensure resources invested by one service e.g. drug treatment services, are not jeopardised by inadequate support and accommodation
- Meet the particular needs of substance users in touch with the criminal justice system
- Help sustain tenancies and prevent negative departures.
- Increase the number of people receiving support
- Make strong links with other agencies
- Promote social inclusiveness; increase the participation of people in their local communities
- Enable success; support people in their desire to build new lives
Our aims are:
- To provide a high quality housing related support service to vulnerable people, which is responsive to their needs, circumstances and aspirations, in order to prevent them becoming homeless
- To support people in addressing and/or managing the problems caused by their use of drugs / alcohol
- To support and encourage clients to develop existing skills and gain confidence in their ability to manage their own homes
- To help people move successfully from temporary into permanent accommodation

Kirklees STARS
STARS (Substance Tenancy and Resettlement Service)

STARS is a housing and support service for single people who are homeless and have substance use issues. The service has 10 self-contained single occupancy properties in various locations across Calderdale and Kirklees, and a team of staff who provide housing related support. STARS will respond to immediate and medium-term accommodation and support needs, at the point of release from prison or discharge from treatment and residential rehabilitation. The service will work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies, including criminal justice and drug treatment agencies, to ensure a comprehensive package of support is being offered and will maintain a flexible referral procedure to ensure that under-served groups gain better access to the service. There is an expectation that people applying for the service are already engaging in treatment or have been sustaining a drug-free lifestyle.

Aim:

Our aims are:
- Clients will be accommodated and supported within the community
- Clients’ engagement with treatment and supervisory agencies will be maintained
- Clients will move on to establish and maintain an independent, drug-free, positive lifestyle
Facilities:

STARS provides individual self-contained accommodation, and the support worker will usually visit the client at home. These visits will usually take place at least twice a week, although the frequency and duration of visits is dependent on support needs and will vary. The service is generally available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. If support is necessary outside these hours it will be considered on an individual basis. Each house has a living room, kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom; some also have a separate study space. The houses are fully-furnished and equipped but clients can bring their own belongings and personalise their home. Clients are responsible for their own cooking and cleaning (with support from staff if needed). All houses are close to local shops, post offices, doctors and public transport. STARS does not provide permanent housing, but as part of the client’s support plan staff will help them find move-on accommodation. The expected length of stay at STARS is around 6-9 months but can be longer, up to a maximum of two years.

CoAchieve
CoAchieve

Focus:

CoAchieve is a Kirklees wide employment service for people (18 years old and over) who have experienced drug and / or alcohol problems and who are in recovery or are stable and are able to engage in work or work like activities.

Aim:

The principal aim of CoAchieve is to enable people with experience of drug / alcohol problems to access and / or remain in employment. We achieve this by working co-productively with individuals accessing the service.

Referral Route:

We accept referrals from any source, including;
1. Self-referrals
2. Statutory agencies – with the applicants permission
3. Voluntary agencies – with the applicants permission
